Donald Trump sat for an hour-long town hall with Fox News’s Sean Hannity in Pennsylvania on Wednesday night, bashing Democratic rival Kamala Harris at every turn and confusing her with Joe Biden less than a week before the two go head-to-head on the debate stage.
Amid a flurry of praise and softball questions from Hannity, Trump slammed Harris’s record on illegal immigration and promised the “largest deportation” in American history if he returns to the White House, baselessly warning of another “1929-style depression” if the Democrat beats him to it.
Harris’s running mate Tim Walz has meanwhile been drawn into a feud with members of his extended family after they posed in Trump T-shirts on social media, with his older brother Jeff Walz telling NewsNation he is “100% opposed” to his sibling’s policies while lamenting airing his opinion on Facebook, saying he did not intend to “influence the general public”.
Earlier in the day, Harris unveiled more of her economic agenda in New Hampshire – promising tax relief for small businesses.
She argued that setting a “billionaire minimum tax” would make the tax code fairer to small businesses and require larger corporations to pay their “fair share”.

Trump’s running mate JD Vance was interviewed on stage in Mesa, Arizona, by Turning Point’s Charlie Kirk yesterday, where he again attacked Tim Walz over his military record in scurrilous fashion and made the statement above, which is utterly absurd given Trump’s own myriad false claims about his record in the Oval Office.
Truth Social: Trump bemoans gag order as he again attempts to delay hush money sentencing
12:30 , Joe Sommerlad
Lawyers for Donald Trump yesterday moved to try to postpone his sentencing in the New York hush money case against him until judges can hear their argument for shifting the matter from state to federal court.
The Republican presidential nominee is currently set to be sentenced by Judge Juan Merchan on September 18 after being found guilty by a jury earlier this year on all 34 counts he faced over the falsification of business records to hide a payout made to porn star Stormy Daniels in October 2016 in order to silence her about an alleged affair that might have cost him that year’s presidential election had it come to light.
His attorneys worry in their request for a stay that the sentencing “could result in the immediate incarceration of President Trump and irreparable harm to the impending election before this court has an opportunity to address the federal interests implicated by this appeal”.
On his social media platform, Trump is STILL griping about the gag order preventing him from ranting publicly about the case:
Nobody can believe I am still under a Gag Order from Judge Merchan and, despite being the leading Candidate for President of the United States, I am not allowed to speak about a trial that virtually every well known and respected legal scholar said, “THERE IS NO CRIME.” I DID…

Biden set to block Nippon Steel’s $15bn acquisition of US Steel
12:10 , Joe Sommerlad
The White House is reportedly close to announcing that President Joe Biden will block Nippon Steel’s acquisition of US Steel on national security grounds, two sources familiar with the situation told Reuters on Wednesday, amid growing bipartisan political opposition to the $14.9bn deal.
US Steel warned yesterday that a failure to conclude a deal with Japan-based Nippon would put thousands of American union jobs at risk and signalled that it would close some steel mills and potentially move its headquarters out of the politically important state of Pennsylvania.
A decision could be announced as soon as this week.
Biden’s move could potentially impact the United States’ relationship with Japan, a close ally, but appears to come with the endorsement of Kamala Harris, who on Monday expressed her belief that US Steel must remain “American-owned and operated”.
Her Republican rival Donald Trump has likewise pledged to block the deal if elected.
Walz aims donut jibe at JD Vance on visit to farmers’ market
11:50 , Joe Sommerlad
Tim Walz mocked his Republican rival with a donut joke as he visited a farmers’ market in the battleground state of Pennsylvania yesterday.
Kamala Harris’s running mate poked fun at his Republican counterpart’s awkward attempt to make small talk at a donut store in Valdosta, Georgia, last month.
An excruciating video of that encounter included one staff member telling Vance that she did not want to appear on camera as he picked out sweet treats.
On Wednesday, Walz visited Cherry Hill Orchards and Farm in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, a state that will be crucial if a Harris victory is to materialise in November.
“What am I looking at in a Whoopie Pie?” Walz asked the manager before getting in a crack at Vance.
“I have no problem picking out donuts,” he said.
The Minnesota Governor also had a nice line on Trump’s doom-laden rhetoric, comparing his speeches to “the next screenplay for Mad Max” and arguing that the Republican is “rooting against America”.
Walz: There is deliberate effort by some people to make them believe that things are pessimistic. Every time I hear Donald Trump give a speech, it’s like the next screenplay for Mad Max or something. They are rooting against America…. pic.twitter.com/GuHigo4WlR

Tim Walz dragged into family feud after relatives back Trump for president
11:10 , Joe Sommerlad
Kamala Harris’s running mate Tim Walz has been drawn into a feud with members of his extended family after they posed in Trump T-shirts on social media.
The image of eight relatives of the Minnesota Governor finds them wearing grammatically-incorrect “Walz’s for Trump” shirts and standing in front of a “Trump 2024” flag that also reads: “Take America back.”
The image was shared by a family friend and posted on X by Charles Herbster, a former Republican candidate for governor in Nebraska, where the Democratic vice presidential nominee grew up.
“Tim Walz’s family back in Nebraska wants you to know something,” Herbster wrote on X.
Trump duly shared it on his Truth Social profile and gloated about the feud on Fox last night.
Since then, Walz’s older brother Jeff Walz telling NewsNation he is “100% opposed” to his sibling’s policies while lamenting airing his opinion on Facebook, saying he did not intend to “influence the general public”.
Walz’s mother Darlene, 89, has also been dragged into the beef, telling The Daily Beast from her home in Butte, Nebraska: “I want to keep peace with all of them.”
She added: “I think the best thing maybe, for me, is to just stay out of it.”

Liz Cheney endorses Harris and warns of ‘danger’ Trump poses

Former Wyoming representative Liz Cheney has endorsed Kamala Harris for president, breaking with her fellow conservatives still supporting Donald Trump.
Cheney, one of Trump’s most vocal Republican critics while she was in Congress, said during an event at Duke University on Wednesday that fellow conservatives don’t have “the luxury” of sitting out or writing in other candidates if they’re uneasy about Trump, especially in a swing state like the university’s home of North Carolina.
“As a conservative, as someone who believes in and cares about the Constitution, I have thought deeply about this,” she told the crowd.
“Because of the danger that Donald Trump poses, not only am I not voting for Donald Trump, but I will be voting for Kamala Harris.”

US accuses Russian state media of meddling in election through right-wing influencers
08:30 , Oliver O’Connell
Federal law enforcement agencies have seized 32 Russian-backed websites that prosecutors say were designed to sow disinformation and discord ahead of 2024 elections and boost Donald Trump’s campaign.
Separately, two employees of Russia’s state-controlled media network RT have been criminally charged with allegedly launching a $10 million propaganda scheme that enlisted popular right-wing social media influencers.
The allegations revealed in warrants and unsealed indictments are evidence of Russia’s attempts to “engage in a covert campaign to interfere and influence the outcome of our country’s elections,” Attorney General Merrick Garland said in remarks on Wednesday.

US accuses Russian state media of enlisting right-wing influencers to meddle in election

Alex Woodward reports:
Two Russian nationals who work for Russian state-controlled media outlet RT — Kostiantyn Kalashnikov and Elena Afanasyeva — were also charged with conspiracy to violate the Foreign Agents Registration Act and conspiracy to commit money laundering.
Prosecutors allege they relied on a Tennessee-based company and contracted with US-based social media influencers to target specific demographics and regions as part of a calculated effort to subvert the election.
That company — TENET Media, which is not mentioned by name in the indictment — includes a constellation of well-known right-wing influencers, including Tim Pool, Dave Rubin and Benny Johnson, among others.
RT employees helped publish nearly 2,000 English-language videos on TikTok, Instagram, X and YouTube, where they have racked up 16 million views, according to prosecutors.
The companies and influencers “never disclosed to the influencers or their millions of dollars its ties to RT or the Russian government,” and instead claimed they used a “private investor” who was in fact a “fictitious persona,” according to Garland.

Trump campaign raised $130m in August
Wednesday 4 September 2024 20:39 , Oliver O’Connell
The Trump-Vance campaign says it has exceeded internal benchmarks with its latest figures for grassroots donations in August.
With $130m raised over the month, the campaign says “a stunning 98 percent of this month’s donations were under $200” with an average donation of $56.
The campaign ended August with $295m cash on hand.
Brian Hughes, Trump campaign senior advisor, said: “With Republicans united and a growing number of Independents and disaffected Democrats crossing partisan lines, the Trump-Vance campaign has momentum for the final stretch of the race. These fundraising numbers from August are a reflection of that movement and will propel President Trump’s America First movement back to the White House so we can undo the terrible failures of Harris and Biden.”
Full story: US accuses Russia of using state media to spread disinformation and ‘interfere and influence’ elections

Jared Kushner and Ivanka Trump accused by locals of ‘taking what is ours’ over Albania resort project
Wednesday 4 September 2024 20:20 , Oliver O’Connell
Local residents in Albania are accusing Jared Kushner and Ivanka Trump of attempting to take land away from them for two luxury resort projects.
The daughter and son-in-law of former President Donald Trump are looking to invest almost $1bn in the area. Kushner previously announced his plans to build a hotel and a number of beach villas on a part of land that has been farmed by an Albanian family for generations but which was seized from them after the end of the Communist regime in 1991, according to The New York Times.
Gustaf Kilander has the story.

And it is just outrageous that every day in our country that parents have to send their children to school worried about whether or not their child will come home alive. It’s senseless. We’ve got to stop it. It does not have to be this way.

As Harris and Walz hit the campaign trail, Trump spends afternoon posting video messages
Wednesday 4 September 2024 20:08 , Oliver O’Connell
With Kamala Harris and Tim Walz out on the campaign trail, you might be wondering what Donald Trump is doing.
At 5.30pm he will pre-tape a one-hour town hall in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, with Sean Hannity of Fox News which will be broadcast at 9pm this evening. Nothing captures the spontaneity of being asked questions by a pre-vetted audience than taping it almost four hours in advance.
To kill time until then, the former president has been busily posting videos to his Truth Social account. By 3pm he was up to nine videos and a TikTok.
Trump may not have left his private country club for the better part of a week, but he’s posting lots of videos on Truth Social this afternoon — so maybe that’s almost as good as campaigning?

First up, he complained about the workings of the justice system, claiming the Justice Department had violated its own policy by “going after” him in the 60 days leading up to the first votes being cast on September 6. The DOJ began prosecuting Trump in 2023.
He then lashed out at “Comrade Harris” over the border, before accusing the vice president of running away from her record, including this odd line: “Why did you change all 14 of your major policy ideas just for the purpose of an election. And we know one thing, she’ll never do it, because she’s a… Marxist, and Marxists don’t believe in the Trump philosophy. Not gonna happen. We’re not gonna let her win.”
In the next video, he called her a Communist. If you’re wondering what the difference is, it’s that Marxism is a philosophy, while communism is a system of government based on Marxist principles.
Trump, who complains about everything from dishwashers to airports to crowd sizes, began his next video with a tiny little bit of projection, saying: “COMRADE KAMALA HARRIS DOES NOTHING BUT COMPLAIN…”
Hitting his stride (these were all recorded back to back as evidenced by the knot of his tie), Trump did a quick lap of election issues, ranging from the economy, inflation, the border, “respect for our nation”, and preventing the Third World War and a 1929 recession.
In the two final shortest videos, he espoused “TRUMP CASH vs KAMALA CRASH!” and reminded viewers of his tax proposals for social security and tips.
News you can use: How to stop getting all those campaign texts
Wednesday 4 September 2024 20:00 , Oliver O’Connell
With another election season comes patriotism, heightened tensions, an in-your-face news cycle and of course, a tirade of political text messages.
“It’s Joe. We’re in this race together. With so much at stake this November, can you rush a donation to the campaign now?”
“From Trump: VICTORY IS OUR ULTIMATE REVENGE! Be the FIRST PERSON to read my Super Tuesday victory memo.”
“We missed our August goal! We’re upgrading you to a 10x MATCH. CHIP IN NOW.”
It seems like now, more than ever, political campaigns are using mass text message operations to ask potential voters for support, money, and questionnaire answers. It’s a daily occurrence that some people cannot escape.
Ariana Baio explains what your options are.
