Sheer looks are streaming down the red carpet, as evidenced by the 2024 MTV VMAs on Wednesday in New York. As the trend continues to be one of the biggest sartorial takeaways from the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival, after reigning at this year’s Met Gala, ESPY Awards, and Oscar parties, there was no shortage of takes on see-through styles at the Video Music Awards.
From performers to presenters and the host, Megan Thee Stallion, there was a parade of sheer looks to behold. Chappell Roan, Anitta, Margaret Qualley, Coco Jones, Lisa, Benson Boone, and Tate McRae wore just a handful of them. Ahead, see all of the attendees who embraced the sheer trend.
Megan Thee Stallion
Prior to pulling double duty as the host and one of the performers, Megan Thee Stallion arrived at the VMAs in a sculptural gown with a sheer panel beneath a strapless bodice, giving the illusion that she emerged from her dress’ taffeta-wrapped mermaid skirt. She paired the gown with two large jeweled rings and a diamond bracelet.
Chappell Roan
Chappell Roan walked the red carpet in a look that hinted at her fiery medieval performance that followed. She wore a sheer, flowing gown by Y/Project with chainmail fingerless gloves that put her pearl-topped metal manicure on full display.
Anitta
Anitta wore a sheer look by Dolce & Gabbana that consisted of a gauzy veil, skirt, and stockings.
Margaret Qualley
Margaret Qualley embraced both the sheer trend and the fringe trend with a tulle-trimmed dress that featured a drop-waist, feather-strewn skirt.
Coco Jones
Coco Jones wore a luminous, sheer sculptural gown by Lever Couture, paired with strappy silver heels, and sparkling layered bracelets.
Lisa
Blackpink’s Lisa started the night in a custom Mugler design and finished it in a gauzy off-the-shoulder dress with a shiny bodysuit beneath it.
Tate McRae
Tate McRae channeled Britney Spears’ iconic sheer lace moment at the 2001 VMAs, wearing a high-neck, long-sleeve lace mini dress with Fleur du Mal lingerie, jewels by Jacob & Co., and sandal heels by Maison Ernest.
Sasha Colby
Sasha Colby sparkled in a crystal-dotted draped gown by Christian Siriano, which the designer shared photos of on Instagram, writing, “Beaded mesh for the QUEEN tonight at the #vmas.”
Isabel LaRosa
Isabel LaRosa wore a long-sleeve turtleneck sheer black dress from Azzedine Alaïa RTW winter 1987 collection.
Benson Boone
Benson Boone wore a lacy take on the sheer trend, styling a lace pullover with a pair of slacks and shining boots.
