The New Orleans Saints had already lost one of their top free agent cornerbacks a few days ago, but now a depth piece decided to go elsewhere as well. Late on Saturday night, ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reported that the Seattle Seahawks had signed veteran cornerback Shemar Jean-Charles. It looks as though he will remain in a depth role, but will look for that opportunity elsewhere.
Jean-Charles was a fifth-round pick by the Green Bay Packers back in the 2021 NFL draft. He spent two years there before getting cut and signing with the San Francisco 49ers. He didn’t last a season there, getting cut in November. That’s when the Saints brought him in and potentially saved his career. Jean-Charles was on track to make the Saints’ 53-man roster last summer but was passed up by guys like Rico Payton.
With the team bringing Isaac Yiadom back on a three-year deal, Jean-Charles faced an even steeper uphill battle to make the cut in 2025. So he’ll get a better opportunity with Seattle. This past year in New Orleans was easily his best in the NFL, but that still meant just 14 tackles with an interception and two passes broken up. The injuries to the secondary allowed him to see the field more than he ever has. Previously, he was just a special teamer. Now he could be a legitimate backup cornerback.
