The iconic Eagles varsity jacket made famous by the late Princess Diana has been re-released for purchase on Friday, and it almost sold out within hours.
In November 2023, Mitchell & Ness debuted its recreation of the Philadelphia Eagles varsity jacket that Princess Diana wore through the ’80s and ’90s, including on the cover of People magazine. The jacket featured an oversize, vintage fit, and was sold for $400.
On Friday, the brand dropped another fresh inventory of the coveted jacket with sizes ranging from XS to 5XL. At the time of publishing, only size XS was available at mitchellandness.com, and all sizes were sold out at nflshop.com.
Princess Diana‘s Eagles jacket is one of the most recognizable NFL jackets worldwide. In 1982, the late Eagles statistician Jack Edelstein met Diana at the funeral of Princess Grace of Monaco. During the reception, the two were conversing, and the topic of American football came up.
“She thought football was like soccer,” Edelstein said to “Philadelphia Daily News” after Diana passed away in 1997. “She asked, ‘What are your colors?’ I said, ‘Green and silver.’ She said, ‘Those are my favorite colors.’“
Edelstein promised to send Princess Diana some Philadelphia Eagles T-shirts, but the team’s then-owner, Leonard Tose, thought a varsity jacket was more elevated and fitting. She was photographed wearing the jacket numerous times, including on a trip to Alton Towers Theme Park and once to drop off her son, Prince Harry, at Wetherby Prep School in 1991.
In November 2023, a replica of Princess Diana‘s Philadelphia Eagles jacket signed by Kylie Kelce, wife of former Eagles center Jason Kelce, was sold for $100,000 during an auction in support of the Eagles Autism Foundation.
Princess Diana’s Eagles jacket even got the star treatment with its own special on ESPN’s “Sunday NFL Countdown,” where Diana’a former bodyguard Ken Wharfe, talked about the jacket and Diana’s personal style.
