Although Easter Monday is not a federal holiday, thousands of children and families flock to the South Lawn for the annual White House Egg Roll. This morning’s event also welcomed thousands of attendees, who had the opportunity to participate in corporate-backed activities and learn some history before the country’s 250-year anniversary in 2026.
President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump greeted attendees with the American flag hanging at half mast in honor of the death of Pope Francis. The first lady donned a vanilla-colored Mackage leather trenchcoat for the overcast day, and uncharacteristically lower-heeled shoes from Roger Vivier. At a time when talks of tariffs are often in the air, Mackage was notably started in Montreal by Eran Elfassy in 1999 and now has stores in the U.S., Canada, South Korea, London and Japan. Roger Vivier is a Paris-based luxury brand.
The yearly egg roll dates back to 1878, when President Rutherford B. Hayes was in office but firsthand accounts of less formal festivities trace back to Abraham Lincoln’s presidency. This year’s participants could sign a miniature Declaration of Independence, dress up as some of the patriotic “Founding Fathers” and use the “George the Star: An American250 Story” activity book. Along with the U.S. Marine Band, a “Go With Yoyo” gig and other musical performances, there were more unexpected activities like the “Ringing of the Bell” opportunity that was provided by the New York Stock Exchange and an AI-powered experience and photo op that was courtesy of Meta. YouTube served up a “Bunny Hop stage” and Amazon offered a family photo op “Celebrating Reading.” Future astronauts could partake in a “Space Exploration Experience” that was courtesy of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. There were also two attractions — a “Be Best military card writing station” and a “Be Best hopscotch (area) for the most energetic guests” — that were named such as a nod to the “Be Best” initiative that Melania Trump started during her husband’s first administration.

The 2025 gathering was expected to attract 40,000 attendees (per the White House), as well as some members of the Trump administration’s inner circle like U.S. attorney general Pam Bondi and White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles, who have been known to sport suits in Easter egg-colored pastels on occasion. As it has done for nearly 50 years, the American Egg Board provided the 30,000 eggs that were hand dyed by staff and volunteers but this year’s assortment were small and medium-sized ones, which are less popular with consumers.

As in years past, tickets were doled out through a lottery system. And attendees received a wooden commemorative egg, which was a tradition that former First Lady Nancy Reagan started. Non-attendees could also buy a 2025 commemorative wooden egg via the White House Historical Association’s e-commerce. But as of Monday the item, which had been discounted 10 percent, was sold out.
