Denzilpatrick Adds a Dash of Military Rigor to Soft Summer Silhouettes


Like most Brits, designers Daniel Gayle and James Bosley of Denzilpatrick can’t wait for the sun to show its face, and for summer to begin — at last. Alas, it’s a famously short, blink-and-you’ll-miss-it season in these parts, but the designers are ready to savor every drop of sunshine.

With that expectation in mind, they sent out jaunty electric orange swim shorts (worn with matching, inflatable arm bands); whisper-thin cardigan-style tops, and long, languid ribbed knit tanks, all fit for poolside shenanigans on the rooftop of Soho House in Shoreditch, or more likely just a day lolling in the pub garden.

There were smarter looks, too, inspired by marching bands and amateur musical club uniforms, all with a summery feel. The designers offered a fresh take on the suit, sending out safari-style tops tucked into fluid trousers that were printed with scrolls and swirls, or more tailored bottoms adorned with bits of gold leaf.

Loose, boxy jackets came with brass buttons on the pockets and epaulets, while double-breasted ones had frogging on the sleeves. Even the most casual of T-shirts looked spiffy with military braiding draped across the front, and over one shoulder.

It was whimsical, layer-able and — most importantly — commercial. Although the business is mainly direct-to-consumer, the designers have been picking up retail clients in countries including China, Japan and South Korea, where their brand of tailored London cool should play well.
