Bolivian forests hold carbon storage potential | Science




Bolivia’s vast forests, including ecosystems of global conservation interest such as the Amazon rainforest and the Chiquitano dry forest (1), are threatened by increasing deforestation (2) and fires (3). Government authorities have failed to recognize the ecosystem services that forests provide (4), especially carbon sequestration. Fortunately, a recent decision by the courts has given Bolivia the opportunity to reformulate its forest protection strategy, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and sequester more carbon.
